Here's what's happening in the middle of our blistering summer.

1. Robert York and I have established an official exhibition policy statement. I've put it into force for the West Palm Beach Armory exhibition but you'll have to make a final approval at our board meeting on November 14 in Orlando at 10:00 am. The policy is attached to this email for your study.

2. Joan Klutch has all but a few details set for the Symposium on Sanibel Island January 9-10. Dan Weldon, a noted printmaker will be our juror. He will conduct a workshop and participate in a panel discussion. There is a size limitation of 36" x 36" for this exhibition. The prospectus is nearly ready for printing and we'll get it out as soon as possible. It may appear on the web site fairly soon. This should be a fabulous venue for our Symposium.

3. We have a firm offer and will be exhibiting at the Selby Gallery of the Ringling School in May of 2012. This is not a Symposium but will be an auxiliary state wide exhibition.

We have a firm offer to exhibit at the Cornell in Del Ray Beach in April - May of 2011 but the space will limit us to 40 works so it may not be suitable for a symposium. It will either be a juried exhibition or an Area I&II + Board exhibition. The Coral Springs gallery liked our Area show in their lobby and they want us for the main gallery. Cecily is talking to them about hosting the Symposium in 2012 but we won't know for sure about this until after the West Palm Beach Armory show.

Longboat Key has indicated interest in hosting our Symposium after seeing our catalogs and noting how we have workships and the juror's remarks. Ahlin and Richard Cowdrick are following up on this for the 2011 Symposium. Ahlin is still in discussion with the Maitland Art center and is sure we'll eventually be able to have an exhibition there.

Mindy Colton has approached the Museum of Florida Art about an exhibition or Symposium sometime in te future but they are currently in a state of flux and unable to make any commitments.

Everyone needs to keep eyes open for possible venues whether for Area shows or for state-wide exhibitons.

4. My friend, David Chang, professor of art at Florida International University in Miami is interested in becoming a member and will help us identify other good artists in the Miami area as prospective members. David is planning on coming to the West Palm Beach Armory exhibition reception to see the work and meet some of our members. Anjal is willing to have someone from the Miami area as her co-chair of Area I.

5. If you haven't looked at the web site recently, please do. Images of the award winners from the Leepa/Ratner Museum in Tarpon Springs are there to see. It looks great! Thanks to Roberta!

6. Cheryl Anne Day-Swallow is starting work on the next newsletter so get your information to her asap.

Hope the rest of your summer is profitable and art centered.

Barre

Please note in your dates, our symposium starts Friday, January 8, is our Awards Dinner.
Jan. 9th is opening reception, and Sunday is our General Meeting and Board Meeting to follow.

New email

Please note my email change.

Jeffrey Smart Baisden

b2746@windstream.net

FLAG NOTES May 2009

First let me congratulate Ahlin on her successful term of office as President of FLAG. You've set the stage for our continued success as a great artist's organization.

And secondly congratulations to Cheryl Day-Swallow and her crew of Area 4 workers for putting on a wonderful Symposium. The warm hospitality by Area IV and the Leepa-Rattner museum were really wonderful and the exhibition and reception was outstanding. The museum enjoyed hosting us and invited us to return on a continuing rotation of 7 years.
Cheryl Anne is going to follow up on the Leepa-Rattner's invitation to return and will set a definite date for that.

Thanks to everyone who stayed over for the Board Meeting on Sunday morning. I appreciate your support and look forward to working with all of our fine Area Chairs and the rest of the Board during my term as President. I wanted to touch base again and review the decisions we made.

Our secretary, Joan Lyon, will supply us with minutes of the board meeting from Friday, May 1, the general meeting Saturday, May 2, and our Board meeting Sunday, May 3.
Treasurer Roberta Schofield will supply us with a treasurer's report as soon as all transactions for the Tarpon Springs Symposium are finalized.

I asked all Board Members in attendance for an evaluation of the Symposium. What did we do especially well and what could we improve. Roberta agreed to put a request for an evaluation from the entire membership n the next newsletter if I provide the wording.

We asked Joan Klutch to go ahead and see about arrangements with BIG Arts on Sanibel Island to host the 2010 symposium. Joan took us at our word and has already confirmed with BIG Arts the exhibition dates and opening and has a hotel lined up. So we are a BIG GO for the 2010 symposium 9 months from now on January 8 and 9 on Sanibel Island. Joan checked with Howard Cowdrick about the negotiations with Longboat Key. He says Longboat Key has not yet responded. The BIG Arts facility is apparently a really nice venue, but in order to ensure that there is enough space for everyone we're going to limit the size to a maximum of 36" wide by 36 " tall including framing for 2D and 36"x36"x36" for 3 D Joan already has talked with Dan Welden about being our juror. This is tentative. Joan even has recruited a volunteer to deal with the jpeg entries. Good work Joan! Roberta Schofiled agreed to supply Joan with the budgets for the past two Symposiums.

We asked Ahlin to find out about the status of our request for an exhibition at the Maitland Museum of Art. I think I'm supposed to follow up about the Appleton Museum in Ocala on our earlier inquiries with them about exhibitions. If anyone has any ideas or contacts for other good venues for future years please investigate. Remember my # 1 priority is to have Symposiums set for 5 years or more in the future.

In our general meeting we agreed that we would have a statement of our policy about exhibiting digital art work and in the board meeting we agreed that Robert York would research what is being done in museums around the country. Joan Klutch gave us a handout with a policy statement from Women Contemporary Artists. We also agreed that Robert and I would develop a statement and have it in place for the Armory show and then it could be adopted formally at our next Symposium. It was suggested we consult with Keith Theriot on this issue. Robert and I will, of course, make the statement available to the Board members for comment before finalizing it.

We also agreed that we would include a page in our Symposium book a page outlining the awards we give including the dedications and the donors, subject to the approval of the various donors (some may prefer to remain anonymous).

We agreed to go ahead with the registration on Artist Registry. Mindy Colton, Area V chair, agreed to do the internet sign up and Roberta Schofield will write the $100. check that will be required. Roberta Schofield will also put a link on our website to Artists Registry.

Foks, we accomplished a lot and are off to a fine start. I'm really excited about Sanibel and our future growth. Hope all of you have a great summer making art, but keep in touch and I'll do likewise! All board members are invited.
There will be a juried exhibition September 12 - October 3, 2009 at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach. We are responsible for the food and drink at the reception on Saturday, September13. Also, we pay for the signage maximum of $200. The Armory sends out an e-mail invitation to 5,000 people. The Armory will obtain an out of state juror. We are responsible for juror’s honorarium.
There will be a juried exhibition April 28-June 26, 2011 at the Cornell Museum of Art and American Culture, second floor in Del Ray.
Cecily proposed a program on art in public places. Palm Beach County has a very dynamic coordinator for that, Elayna Toby Singer.

Area Chair IV Cheryl Anne Day-Swallow

Cheryl Anne reported that Area IV enjoyed a wonderful show at the Octagon in Clearwater which was held in April-May 2008.
Area IV has been working very hard to prepare for the 2009 symposium which will be held at the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art on May 1-3, 2009. This year, to save money for the FLAG organization, two major things will happen; Symposium packets for each area chair have been made up and will be given out. The packets include one envelope for each area member which need to be given out to the members during their next area meeting, or the chair can mail them. Whichever works best. If you are a chairperson and do not receive an envelope for one of the artists in your group, please e-mail Cheryl Anne ASAP. Cheryl will need the following information when you write. YOUR NAME, YOUR AREA, THE ARTIST NAME, THEIR COMPLETE ADDRESS INCLUDING ZIP CODE, THEIR PHONE AND THEIR EMAIL.
Roberta Schofield will be assembling the catalog. Thank you to Roberta for tackling this difficult task. One of the biggest changes for our symposium is that the catalog itself will be available during the symposium. Which means due dates have been moved to allow time for the catalogs to be printed. Please take time to note these important dates in the entry form. We don’t want anyone to be left out.
Bob York has moved from Area VII and joined Area IV

Area Chair V Mindy Colton

Mindy applied for an Area V group at the Crealde School of Art Jenkins Gallery in
Winter Park. Board members and Area 5 members who responded were Ahlin, Cheryl Bogdanowitsch, Mindy Colton, Carol Frye, Lynn Hughes, Barbara Leto, Sydney McKenna, Joan Nixon, Richard Rosen, Henry Sinn, Cheryl Day-Swallow. Nancy Cockerham in Lakeland suggested she submit the group for an exhibit to the Arts on the Park Gallery in Lakeland. She is also planning on submitting the group show to the Terrace Gallery in the Orlando Park City Hall and also to the Albin Polasek Museum in Winter Park. She is continuing to look for other exhibition venues.
Fred and Rose Samuelson have moved to Daytona Beach left the Area V Group. They are now in Area V1. There have been three applicants for membership from Area VI.

New Business
Howard Cowdrick will replace Judy Lyons Schneider as Chair of Area III.
Ahlin has written to Marlene Hauck at Long Boat Key Center of the Arts regarding a FLAG exhibition in 2010. Jean WagnerTroemel will offer a $500 award in memory of her husband to be called The Benjamin Award. The President will send letters of sympathy to Jean Wagner Troemel and to the Founder of The Armory Art Center, Mary Montgomery of Palm Beach. She will also write to the Treasurer of the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation regarding our Award for 2009.

Old Business
Area Chair VI, Sydney McKenna handed out copies of a very professionally designed brochure by Maribel Angel. UNFORTUNATELY there will have to be changes made because of new revisions to the application form. Ahlin will proof the final version. Board Members are asked to send CD’s of their work to Maribel for inclusion in the brochure. Jan Miller asked for a motion, when the brochure is approved, to print 5,000 copies on 100lb glossy paper.

The 58th Annual Symposium Update
Ahlin will send an email to all members of the board about our Juror of Awards, Artist Sam Gilliam. She mentioned that Gilliam is best known for his draped or otherwise unconventionally suspended paintings considered by many to be a major contribution to the history of contemporary American art. He is truly one of the giants of this century.

Our next meeting will be held at the United Arts of Central Florida Board Room, 2450 Maitland Center Parkway, S/201 Maitland, FL 32751, on Saturday, February 7, at 11a.m to select new members. An email will be sent to all board members with directions.

Flag News November 2008

We have 2 new members for area VI- they are old members, but from a different area before this.-moved to Ormond from Orlando. The more than 100 recent works at the Museum of Arts and Sciences are absolutely Florida: full of light, color, energy and, most of all, fun.

There are the usual sorts of Florida studies: bright flowers, lush landscapes, dreamy abstractions that evoke the sound, feel and even scent of marsh, dune and sea. But the wide-ranging collection of works by members of FLAG, a statewide artists' group that was founded in 1934, goes well beyond the expected and the familiar.

"Morning Glow," a large oil-on-linen landscape by Daniel Ambrose of Ormond Beach, does more than capture the luminous beauty of the dawning day. It also establishes a strong sense of place and expresses the emotions associated with it. Green and gold, viewed through a soft haze, its depiction of low-lying Central Florida terrain is vivid, and irresistible.

Just as fresh, though far more moody, is "Afternoon Gone By," an exquisite prisma-colored photo-print by Lakeland artist Cynthia Epps-Smith. The small print shows an old kitchen worktable and a few homey items -- a box of salt, a roll of paper towels -- and implies the rest. Light falls softly through tall double windows behind the table, illuminating the implements of a dinner-in-the-making or, possibly, a lunch already eaten. Epps-Smith's subject isn't a kitchen, however; just as Ambrose painted atmosphere in his landscape, her domestic interior depicts a state of mind.

Also gently true to its time and location is a watery batik by Wendy Tatter of St. Augustine. A small sign leans against a rundown storefront in "Bike at the Beauty Shop," directing viewers into the Aquarius Beauty Salon. And, eloquently delineated with Tatter's muted pinks, turquoises and lavenders, is the spirit of the salon named after the zodiac sign -- or maybe the ancient water-bearing god.

What makes the works in the FLAG show so memorable isn't so much their variety and overall high quality as it is their cumulative impact.

A move from "Morning Glow" to "Bike at the Beauty Shop" and on to "Afternoon Gone By" reveals three very different styles, mediums, subjects and techniques.

At the same time however, it also creates a series of impressions that blend into a powerful mood.

Factor in the big, abstract ceramic construction by Richard Rosen of Naples, "Gotham VI," and the dark, glowing forms of "Night Mall," a nocturne by Sally Sloan of Sarasota, and the impression crystallizes.

Florida is a place with many faces and multiple moods. And its artists, from one end of the state to the other, respond to their single subject vibrantly, even passionately.

Whether as wistful as "Hieroglyphics for the Heart," a mixed-media "book" by Gretchen Ebersol of Jacksonville, or as lyrical as "Transformations," a lapping, swirling composition by Cecily Hangen of West Palm Beach, the FLAG show leaves nothing to be desired.

Given the quality of these artists, the state's art is in good hands.

laura.stewart@news-jrnl.com

If You Go

WHAT: Florida Artist Group Exhibition, works by members of the statewide organization

WHEN: Through Sept. 3; 9 a.m. to

5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday

WHERE: Museum of Arts and Sciences, 352 S. Education and other cultural aims are advocated at these meetings through lectures, panel discussions, films and demonstrations.

In addition to the Symposium and Exhibition held in the Spring, area exhibitions and meetings are sponsored at other times in various places in the state. The nature of these meetings follows the character of the Spring meeting.
