Flag News January 2009

Area Chair II Cecily Hangen

Cecily Hangen reports that Area II will have an exhibit in the lobby of the Coral Springs Art Museum and Theater in May 2009. All board members are invited.
There will be a juried exhibition September 12 - October 3, 2009 at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach. We are responsible for the food and drink at the reception on Saturday, September13. Also, we pay for the signage maximum of $200. The Armory sends out an e-mail invitation to 5,000 people. The Armory will obtain an out of state juror. We are responsible for juror’s honorarium.
There will be a juried exhibition April 28-June 26, 2011 at the Cornell Museum of Art and American Culture, second floor in Del Ray.
Cecily proposed a program on art in public places. Palm Beach County has a very dynamic coordinator for that, Elayna Toby Singer.

Area Chair IV Cheryl Anne Day-Swallow

Cheryl Anne reported that Area IV enjoyed a wonderful show at the Octagon in Clearwater which was held in April-May 2008.
Area IV has been working very hard to prepare for the 2009 symposium which will be held at the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art on May 1-3, 2009. This year, to save money for the FLAG organization, two major things will happen; Symposium packets for each area chair have been made up and will be given out. The packets include one envelope for each area member which need to be given out to the members during their next area meeting, or the chair can mail them. Whichever works best. If you are a chairperson and do not receive an envelope for one of the artists in your group, please e-mail Cheryl Anne ASAP. Cheryl will need the following information when you write. YOUR NAME, YOUR AREA, THE ARTIST NAME, THEIR COMPLETE ADDRESS INCLUDING ZIP CODE, THEIR PHONE AND THEIR EMAIL.
Roberta Schofield will be assembling the catalog. Thank you to Roberta for tackling this difficult task. One of the biggest changes for our symposium is that the catalog itself will be available during the symposium. Which means due dates have been moved to allow time for the catalogs to be printed. Please take time to note these important dates in the entry form. We don’t want anyone to be left out.
Bob York has moved from Area VII and joined Area IV

Area Chair V Mindy Colton

Mindy applied for an Area V group at the Crealde School of Art Jenkins Gallery in
Winter Park. Board members and Area 5 members who responded were Ahlin, Cheryl Bogdanowitsch, Mindy Colton, Carol Frye, Lynn Hughes, Barbara Leto, Sydney McKenna, Joan Nixon, Richard Rosen, Henry Sinn, Cheryl Day-Swallow. Nancy Cockerham in Lakeland suggested she submit the group for an exhibit to the Arts on the Park Gallery in Lakeland. She is also planning on submitting the group show to the Terrace Gallery in the Orlando Park City Hall and also to the Albin Polasek Museum in Winter Park. She is continuing to look for other exhibition venues.
Fred and Rose Samuelson have moved to Daytona Beach left the Area V Group. They are now in Area V1. There have been three applicants for membership from Area VI.

New Business
Howard Cowdrick will replace Judy Lyons Schneider as Chair of Area III.
Ahlin has written to Marlene Hauck at Long Boat Key Center of the Arts regarding a FLAG exhibition in 2010. Jean WagnerTroemel will offer a $500 award in memory of her husband to be called The Benjamin Award. The President will send letters of sympathy to Jean Wagner Troemel and to the Founder of The Armory Art Center, Mary Montgomery of Palm Beach. She will also write to the Treasurer of the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation regarding our Award for 2009.

Old Business
Area Chair VI, Sydney McKenna handed out copies of a very professionally designed brochure by Maribel Angel. UNFORTUNATELY there will have to be changes made because of new revisions to the application form. Ahlin will proof the final version. Board Members are asked to send CD’s of their work to Maribel for inclusion in the brochure. Jan Miller asked for a motion, when the brochure is approved, to print 5,000 copies on 100lb glossy paper.

The 58th Annual Symposium Update
Ahlin will send an email to all members of the board about our Juror of Awards, Artist Sam Gilliam. She mentioned that Gilliam is best known for his draped or otherwise unconventionally suspended paintings considered by many to be a major contribution to the history of contemporary American art. He is truly one of the giants of this century.

Our next meeting will be held at the United Arts of Central Florida Board Room, 2450 Maitland Center Parkway, S/201 Maitland, FL 32751, on Saturday, February 7, at 11a.m to select new members. An email will be sent to all board members with directions.
